Early Season River Bass
Made a run out to the Colorado River to see how the fishing is. Actually in March I made 2 trips the first weekend was March 4, 5, 6 and the second trip was two weeks later March 18, 19, 20.
First topwater fish of the trip
The first weekend was tough, with the water temps around 60 degrees at it’s warmest. Friday evening we got on the water with less then a hour of light and we had 3 fish to hand and it looked promising. The rest of the weekend was much tougher as the water temp dropped dramatically, around 56 degrees, and the fish were hard to find.
The trip 2 weeks later saw an improvement in conditions and the fishing. The water was a little warmer but not by much. Friday evening again proved to be good with the warmest temps of the weekend.
There were three of us on the boat and we all had good quality fish to hand over the weekend. We had several sessions and all sessions we got into some fish. There was a mix of techniques used from heavily weighted Crayfish to top water and unweighted streamers with the different flies working as the conditions dictated.
All in all a very good trip and we are looking forward to even better actions in the weeks and months to come as the water temps rise and the flows become more consistent.
Thanks to Chuck and Dave for a great time on the water!
